In the liquid phase oxidation of C4- 8 saturated hydrocarbons to alcohols and ketones, with a molecular oxygen containing gas in presence of a metaboric acid or a lower boric hydrate at 140-180 DEG C., the partial pressure of water is p.s.i. over the reaction mixture at T DEG C is not more than P given by the equation log10P = - 1.85+0.0175T The intermediate boric acid esters may be isolated, but are usually directly hydrolysed to the desired alcohol, e.g. by heating with water. Specified starting materials are cyclopentane, cyclohexane, cycloheptane, cyclooctane, meno and dimethylcyclohexanes, n-pentene, n-hexane, n-heptane and the methylpentanes.
