PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color picture tube capable of coexisting with sufficient enhancement of the brightness of an effective display screen and sufficient enhancement of contrast characteristics to realize high quality display. SOLUTION: The effective display surface of a face plate 101 is made transparent so as to have a maximum transmittance of 70% or more but 95% or less to remarkably enhance the brightness of a display image than the conventional one having a maximum transmittance of 30-50%. In addition, the area ratio to the effective display surface of a black matrix 108 arranged so as to cover the distance part between fluorescent materials on the effective display surface is made 25-60%, and the thickness of a color filter 106 placed between the face plate 101 and a fluorescent material layer is made 0.05-1μm. Drop in brightness is minimized, contrast characteristics are improved, and the brightness on the effective display screen and the enhancement of contrast characteristics coexist, thereby high quality display is made possible.
