PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a displacement detector which can adjust the angle of a detection head to a length measuring scale with a simple structure. SOLUTION: A main scale 10 having an optical grid G is fixed to a stationary member 1. A detection head 20 having an index scale, a light emitting element, a photodetector and the like is supported on a mobile member 2 through a spherical bearing mechanism 30. As the detection head 20 can tilt in any direction with the center point of a spherical body 27 of the spherical bearing mechanism 30 as the center, a moire angleθM and a pitch angleθP are dbjustable. The detection head 20 also can be rotated around the axis line bassing the center point of the spherical body 27 of the spherical bearing mechanism 30 while being parallel with the relative direction of moving thereby enabling adjusting of an angleθR of a roll.
