The presser/cutter consists of a guide surface (3) supported by a frame (4) and made in the form of a belt conveyor which delivers the pieces of material (2) to be compressed and cut. The compression member (1) comprises a second conveyor belt (7) which is held under tension between two rollers (8,9) on a frame (10), the belt having an upper surface (7A) which is out of contact with the material (2) and a lower one (7B) which is in contact with it. A lever system (11) with two arms (11A,11B) turns on a pivot (11C) to vary the pressure applied by the upper conveyor to the material (2). The gap (E) between the axes of the two rollers (8,9) carrying the upper conveyor belt and the length of the belt (7) are selected so that at least one side of the belt is slack between the rollers, with the tension controlled by a cross-member (14) with two additional rollers (14A,14B) which can be moved in a direction (D2) approximately perpendicular to a plane passing through the two rollers (8,9).
