The hood consists of a head cover (20) made from a transparent and heat-resistant material, made with a hem (24) round its lower aperture (22) which has air passages, and an oxygen generator (30) inside the hem. The oxygen generator comprises a flexible envelope (32) with a series of slits (322) in it, a dioxide in tablet form and a central tube of a fragile material containing a weak acid which mixes with the dioxide when the tube is broken to produce oxygen. The fragile tube is made from glass, and the acid is a weak hydrochloric or acetic acid. The oxygen generator's flexible envelope has two end covers (34), and its contents can be held between two felt sleeves.
