A method for processing waste material containing metallic contaminants in the form of carbon-, oxygen-, phosphor-, or sulphur-modified metals includes the steps of mixing the waste material in powder form with aluminium nitride and, if desired, an additional silica and alumina-based vitrification mineral filler; melting the mixture until a first nitrogen vitreous leaching-resistant phase and a second metal phase are obtained; and separating and solidifying the two phases for the disposal or temporary storage of the first and recycling of the second phase. The invention is useful for inactivating or recycling metallic contaminant containing waste material.
