A plastic, pilfer-proof cap (10) is comprised of a cap (10b) having an open end for threaded engagement with a screw threaded bottle and a ring (10a) hingedly attached to the open end of the cap by one or more frangible bridges (10c). The ring has a plurality of circumferentially spaced hooks (12a-h) having free ends which extend inwardly and upwardly to engage a retaining bead on the bottle neck, whereby unscrewing of the cap from the bottle causes the frangible bridges to break. A separate circumferential reinforcing band (30) is positioned around the exterior of the ring to provide hoop forces sufficient to maintain the hooks against the retaining bead and to ensure full breakage of all the bridges.
