The scalpel (1) for use in plastic surgery has a blade (2) which has a cutting edge (4). A flat template element (12) which is parallel to the cutting plane of the blade is arranged at a distance from the cutting edge which defines the cutting thickness. The edge contour (14) of the template element looking vertical to the cutting plane corresponds to the contour of the cutting edge. A variation on the design of the basic scalpel uses one or more holes in the blade at defined distances to give the surgeon an exact view of the cut skin.
