Kryostat-Mikrotom

A cryostat microtome in which the microtome sits in an insulated housing (1), within which the temperature can be reduced from the ambient by means of a computer (6) controlled heat exchanger (2) to -50 degrees C., uses an automatic stop to prevent further pushing when the sample (10) reaches the knife (9). This is achieved by the use of a tiny electrical voltage between sample and knife, whose drop is detected by the electronic switching system when mechanical contact is made. The voltage threshold is temperature dependent. Positioning for sectioning is thus achieved automatically regardless of the size and shape of the sample. This enables accurate fine sections to be produced for microscope examination.
