The head restraint is fastened to the backrest of a motor vehicle seat via supports (6), and has a pivot device to fold it up and down. The pivot device (4) is located outside the restraint (3), and is connected to the supports. The device has a sleeve-like housing (7) with internal turnable bearing journal. Housing and journal are connected via an additional support (5) to the carrying structure (30) of the head restraint. A locking unit is located inside the housing, and in locking position, the housing is connected to the bearing journal. The supports are removably connected to the backrest (9) or to a part connected to the vehicle body.
