In the circulation of gases or liquids in fuel cells the compression energy of stored fuel gas is utilized for the operation of a circulating pump the delivery of which is determined by the gas consumption in the cell. In the drawing, double cylinder pump 1 has the inner compartments connected to electrolyte tank 4 via valves 14 and 15 and to the fuel cell 18 via valves 16 and 17. The outer compartments are alternately supplied with fuel gas under pressure from gas cylinders 13 by reversing valve 11 via line 5 or 6 according to the position of the lever moved by studs 19 with resultant reciprocating motion of the pistons. The fuel gas from the pistons is supplied to the cell 18 via lines 7 and 8 while reducing valve 12 only passes gas to the system when consumption of fuel gas in the cell causes the pressure to fall below the operating pressure which may be 0À2 to 1À5 atmospheres gauge. The cylinders 13 may be at 200 atmospheres gauge pressure when full. |
