1,136,292. Tubular heat exchangers. LINDE A.G. 30 April, 1966 [30 April, 1965], No. 19087/66. Heading F4S. A cross-counterflow heat-exchanger comprises, within an outer casing, not shown, a tube assembly formed from a number of coaxial sections separated from one another by metal diaphragms M and each consisting of a number of coaxial tube layers, e.g. 1-5, arranged in a staggered fashion and composed of a plurality of helically coiled tubes, each section being such that the tube length of its outermost layer does not exceed by more than 10-15% that of its innermost layer. As the distance, from the exchanger axis, of a section increases so the number of helically coiled tubes, in a layer of that section, is increased and the number of turns made by these tubes is decreased so as to maintain a mean tube length and overall axial height of the exchanger equal from section to section, this also being partly effected by varying the centre-to-centre spacing of adjacent tubes.
