The cable is fixedly held near its end section. The cable is untwisted by rolling the end section, section wise, between units if a device. The units are movable relative to each other and are elastic and flexible and spaced apart. Preferably, the cable end section (15) is inserted between a fixed unit (3) of the device and a unit (4) movable relative to the fixed unit, perpendicular to the movement direction (17). The cable (12) may be held by hand against rotation. A device for carrying out the method has a fixed unit (3) which is a roller plate (5) with a ribbed surface (6). The movable unit (4) has a band (9) running over two rollers (7,8) and with a ribbed surface (10). The band (9) also runs over a support (11) between the rollers (7,8). The distance of the roller plate (5) from the band (9) is preferably adjustable.
