The invention relates to a releasing method for a restraint system for protecting the occupants of vehicles, in which method short-time spectral analyses of at least one acceleration component of the support structure are continuously carried out and at least one parameter characteristic of the deformation of the support structure (release parameter) is determined from a plurality of spectral components and, by comparison of the release parameters determined with one or more predetermined threshold values, a decision is taken on the release of the restraint system.
