A primary cell contains a porous depolarizer obtained by mixing the depolarizing material with a conductive material and an inert filling agent which is removed by sublimation under reduced pressure at a temperature not affecting the depolarizer and conductor, after compacting and pelletizing the mixture, the rate of sublimation controlling the pore size. Suitable materials are HgO and graphite flakes for the depolarizer (cathode), naphthalene and pdiohlorbenzene for the volatile filler, zinc (preferably porous, possibly amalgamated) for the anode and KOH solution to which ZnO has been added for electrolyte. In the Figure the porous depolarizer pellet 11 in the steel container 10 is separated by a porous PVC barrier 12 from the porous amalgamated zinc anode 19 in the steel cap 19, the whole interior containing Zn-containing KOH electrolyte. |
