PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate a type of an ink paper without providing special purpose parts for detecting marks by providing a discrimination mark which is provided on the ink paper and indicates a record start position, a kind of ink color, and the type of the ink paper. SOLUTION: When an ink paper is conveyed in an ink heading mode and a mark 10a comes nearby between a mark sensor and a reflecting plate, an output of a mark detecting sensor 8a changes as follows: H-level→L-level→L-level→H-level and an output of a mark detecting sensor 8b changes as follows: H-level→L-level→H-level→H-level. At this time, a microprocessor determines that the ink paper to be attached to an ink cassette has four colors and that the ink paper is conveyed up to a head of a yellow ink as a print start position, and stops the conveyance of the ink paper. The type of the ink paper can be discriminated without providing a special purpose mark for discriminating the type of the ink paper.
