In a chain driven conveying arrangement in which containers 68 fitted with slides 76 are conveyed along a track formed by a pair of U- shaped members 96 disposed with their open sides inwardly directed to receive the slides, addressing pegs 88 are provided on each container which coact with switches at stations along the track to divert the container from the main track at the addressed station and means are provided for introducing a container on to the track in a position which does not foul existing containers on the track. The vertical wall 102 of each rail is formed at spaced points with openings 104 and parts of this wall 106a, 106b adjacent the openings are curved outwardly to guide the endless driving chain 110 which runs within the channel and is engaged by hook members 114 on each slide. The return run of the chain is guided by angle member 124 and the chain is tensioned by spring 122 acting on a slidable pillow block 118. Containers enter the main run from below an upwardly rising track 140, Fig. 11, the rail on the drive side of this track has its upper wall cut away and the opposite rail its upper and vertical walls 170 cut away and theirl ower walls extended to connect with the lower walls of the following section of track. The upper and lower walls of the main track are pivoted and are lifted by the slides as a container enters the main track from the rising track. The drive to the chains on the rising and main tracks are synchronized so that the free hooks on the left side of each container automatically engage the main track drive chain as the container enters the main track. Containers leave the main track via a downwardly sloping track, Fig. 10 (not shown), which is a continuation of the main track. The diverging point is connected to the following length of main track by a pivoted track section controlled by a solenoid. The solenoid is operated to pivot the track section out of its through rim position when a vehicle has to be diverted from the main track. The addressing pegs 88 are selectively positioned transversely of the container and coact with switches positioned in advance of the selected station to actuate the diverging mechanism to route the container to the station.
