PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a supported catalyst for producing carboxylic ester en hanced in the selectivity of carboxylic ester even under a reaction condition raised in the concn. and reaction temp. of aldehyde and reducing a byproduct resulting from alcohol. SOLUTION: This surface control supported catalyst satisfies that a supported compsn. ratio (atomic ratio) (1) of paladium/lead is 3/0.7-3/1.3, the X-ray diffraction angle 2θ (2) of the (111) surface of a palladium/lead intermetallic compd. is 38.55-38.77 and the X-ray photoelectron spectrum intensity ratio (3) of palladium metal [3d(3/2)+3d(5/2)]/ lead metal [4f(7/2)× 1.75] of 1/0.2-1/0.7.
