PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new liquid crystalline compound expressed by a specific formula, exhibiting an extremely stable antiferroelectric liquid crystal phase, having good compatibility with well-known antiferroelectric liquid crystal compounds and capable of providing a liquid crystal material improved in temperature characteristics. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I (R<1> is a 4-16C alkyl, an alkoxy, an alkoxycarbonyl, an alkanoyloxy or an alkoxycarbonyloxy; R<2> is a 4-10C straight-chain alkyl or a 1-3C branched group-containing 4-12C alkyl; X is O or S; ring A and ring C are each formula II, etc.; ring B is formula III, etc.; * C is an asymmetric carbon atom), e.g. 2-(4-((S)-2,6- dimethylheptanoyloxy)phenyl-5-(4-decylphenyl)1,3-pyrimidine. Furthermore, the compound is preferably obtained by reacting, e.g. an optically active 2- substituted alkanoic acids obtained by carrying out asymmetric hydrogenation of the corresponding 2-substituted-2-alkenoic acid with a phenol or thiophenol derivative of formula IV. |
