The invention relates to a liquid-crystalline medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having negative dielectric anisotropy, which contains at least 1 compound of the formula I <IMAGE> (I) in which R1 and R2 are each, independently of one another, H, an unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 18 carbon atoms in which one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by a radical selected from the group consisting of -O-, -S-, and -C 3BOND C-, and the use thereof for active matrix displays based on the ECB effect.
