A magnetic disk driving apparatus includes a magnetic head and a velocity control signal generator for providing a signal dependent upon the difference between a velocity command value and a current estimated head velocity. Head movement is controlled in accordance with the velocity control signal. The velocity command value is dependent upon the difference between a current estimated head position and a target head position. A position gain factor (L1-* small Greek nu *cmd ), used in calculating the current estimated head position (* small Greek theta *c ), is obtained by subtracting the velocity command value from a predetermined value and is therefore adjusted according to head velocity, for optimal accuracy in position estimation. A corresponding system for velocity estimation is also disclosed. Both estimations are represented by equation 12 on page 14 of the specification.
