An external skin preparation whereby the humectant and skin-improving effects of a specific quaternary ammonium salt can be fully utilized. The preparation comprises a quaternary ammonium salt represented by structural formula (I) and an enhancer for the humectant and skin-improving effects of the quaternary ammonium salt selected from the group consisting of vitamin E family, vitamin A derivatives and alkyl-modified carboxyvinyl polymers, wherein R<1>, R<2> and R<3> may be the same or different and each represents C1-6 alkyl, provided that the sum total of the numbers of carbon atoms in R<1>, R<2> and R<3> and n is 8 or less.
