An electric power converter for an AC electric vehicle which is connected at an AC side portion thereof to an AC stringing via a transformer (2), and at a DC side portion thereof to a controller (3) for an electric vehicle driving motor, and which is provided with power factor control means (14, 12, 17) for transferring electric power, which occurs due to the powering or regeneration of a motor (5), between the controller and stringing, by controlling a power factor of the AC side portion, characterized in that the electric power converter is further provided with DC voltage control means (10, 11) for controlling a voltage at the DC side portion of the converter to be a predetermined level, a powering/regeneration detecting means for detecting the powering condition or the regeneration condition of the motor, and a means for detecting a voltage at the stringing, the power factor control means having means (15, 16) for controlling an AC side power factor so as to minimize the variation of a stringing voltage, which occurs due to the powering and regeneration of the motor, in accordance with detected signals from the stringing voltage detecting means and powering/regeneration detecting means.
