A holder 1 for beverage cans and cups of a variety of diameters consists of a base 5 which is swingably attached to a lid 6. On the inner (base facing) side of the lid 6 are attaching means 16a (16b) to attach a container holding section 18 by frictionally pinching the container holding section 18, so that it 18 may be erected from and laid down in the lid 6. The container holding section 18 may be made from wire rod and may consist of a pair of outwardly curved grips 21a and 21b separated by a frictionally gripped (basal) section (19a). The basal section (19a) can have a polygonal cross-section, allowing plane-to-plane contact between it (19a) and optional flat pinching sections of the attaching means 16a (16b). Guides 25 may be provided on the inner surface of the lid 6 to support grips 21a and 21b when the container holding section 18 is laid down in the lid 6 (see figure 5).
