In a process to clean effluent gases from a refuse incineration process, the gases are first filtered to free remove particulate matter, sulphur and nitrogen and are then brought into contact with a carbonaceous absorbing agent. The novelty is that the absorbing agent is de-watered and dried sewage sludge formed in nuts and incorporating supplementary additives such as calcium aluminate, ammonia, ammonia water, urea, amines, amine compounds, amine mixtures or de-sulphurising agents such as CaO and CaCO{SYMBOL 218 /f "Symbol"}3.
