The support system may be used for a ladder (4), esp. a stepladder. The support has a pair of longerons (1) which are splayed outwards so that their lower ends which act as feet are widely spaced apart. The top ends of the longerons are attached to the stringers of the ladder by double swivelling joints (5) which give a wide range of movement. The longerons of the support system are bound together by crossed bracing bars (2) which are joined together by a bolt (6) at the crossing point (3).
