A device for generating and igniting a fuel vapour-air mixture has an electric heating part for an evaporation burner, in particular of a motor vehicle heating equipment. In order to reduce the energy consumed by the heating part and to prolong its service life, at least the surface area of the heating part that radiates the igniting energy is provided with a catalyst material that lowers the ignition temperature. In the same way, the surfaces that surround the heating part and that evaporate the fuel may also be provided with a corresponding catalyst material. The heating part may in particular be designed as a heating pencil with a ceramic sheath that surrounds a heating filament.
