The invention relates to cyclopent[b]indole derivatives of the formula II <IMAGE> in which n is 2, X is hydrogen, R3 is hydrogen or alkyl, R4 is hydrogen, -OH, -O-CO-NR5R6 or -O-CO-R7, in which R5 is alkyl or phenylalkyl, R6 is hydrogen and R7 is phenylalkyl; and R8 is hydroxyl, alkoxy, aminoalkoxy, alkyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aralkyl, morpholinoalkyl, arylcycloalkyl, alkylcarbonyloxy or alkylaminocarbonyloxy. These compounds can be used as intermediates for preparing therapeutically active amino- substituted or imino-substituted cyclopent[b]indole derivatives.
