A rotary burner is installed in the sidewall (11) of a furnace to assist the heating from e.g. electric arcs. The sidewall incorporates cooled, e.g. by liq., panels (18). The burner, mounted rotatably on a support assembly (12) axis, is positioned by assembly 13. Assembly 13 includes an aperture (22) in which the burner body (14) is removably secured, withdrawn from the furnace interior, and being rotatable in an arc up to 180 deg. by a drive assembly. The cooled panel 18 incorporates at least one projection (18a), which provides protection to the burner from molten metal etc. inside the furnace.
