When Vs (H)+Vs (L) is not equal to 0 (V) and a counter electrode potential is Vt, the short- circuiting between the counter electrode and the ground is detected by a fluctuation Vec±ΔVec of an optimum Vec where the DC component of the liquid crystal application voltage between the counter electrode and a picture element electrode can be minimized under 1.5 (|Vt|)<=ΔVec<=25(|Vt|).</p>
