Halogen and free or functionally modified carboxylic acid groups are introduced into a copolymer produced by low pressure copolymerization of at least two aliphatic or cycloaliphatic mono- or di-olefins, preferably containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms, by reacting the copolymer with halogen and an aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic carboxylic acid anhydride unsaturated in α-position, or a functional derivative of such an acid. The reaction may be effected in the presence of 0À05 to 5À0 per cent by weight of the copolymer of a free radical liberating agent, or while irradiating with ultraviolet or high energy radiation. The copolymer may be derived from ethylene, propylene, butene-1,2-methylpentene, vinyl cylcohexene, dicyclopentadiene, isoprene and butadiene. The acid compound may be maleic or aconitic anhydride, maleimide, an ester of maleic or fumaric acid or an acid chloride. The radical liberating agent may be azodiisobutyronitrile, dibenzoyl peroxide or di t-butyl peroxide. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent, e.g. chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, choloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Examples describe the reaction of ethylene/ propylene with chlorine and (1 and 2) maleic anhydride in chlorobenzene, (3) maleic anhydride in carbon tetrachloride, (4) diethyl maleate in chlorobenzene and (5) cis-anhydro-aconitic acid in chlorobenzene, all in the presence of ultraviolet light. The products of (1) and (5) are cross-linked with ethylene diamine. |
