The ink ribbon or paper is transferred between a delivery roller (1) and a collection roller (3). Both rollers are mounted in a printing machine so that they are free to rotate, with the ribbon (4) being transferred from the delivery roller to the collection roller. One or both of the rollers has an end plate (5) that is coded to allow identification of the ribbon or paper carried on the rollers. The identification data (10) can be read automatically by the printer once the roller is in place. The identification data is printed by deposits of ink on the end plate and may include a registered trade mark.
