The machine consists of a joint support assembly (6) and a finishing head including a grinding wheel. The joint support is cylindrical, with a protective casing (12) including an axial recess (11) into which a joint (1) may be located and secured. A sealed chamber surrounds the recess, separated from the casing by one wall surface. Radial jaws (19), regularly spaced around a circular path concentric with the joint location recess, are slidably mounted within recesses of the chamber walls. The jaws are moved by an actuating mechanism towards a locking position in which they project into the proximal portion of the recess and engage the join to lock it against axial movement.
