The invention pertains to benzylhydroxylamines of formula (I), wherein X is N(R7)-O-; Y is O, S; R1 is halogen, CN, NO2, CF3; R2 is H, halogen; R3 is H, NH2, CH3; R4 is H, halogen, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 alkyl halide, C1-C6 alkyl thio, C1-C6 alkyl sulfinyl or C1-C6 alkyl sulfonyl; R5 is H, halogen, C1-C6 alkyl; R6 is H, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 alkyl halide, C3-C6 cycloalkyl, C2-C6 alkenyl; R8 is H, C1-C6 alkyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, C1-C6 alkyl halide, C3-C6 alkenyl or C3C6 alkinyl, where each of the last five radicals indicated can carry 1-3 substituents. The invention also pertains to the salts of (I), with R3, R7 and/or R8 being hydrogen. These compounds are useful as herbicides and for desiccation/defoliation of plants.
