Linear alpha-olefin products which are enriched in one or more olefins of a selected carbon number are prepared by an ethylene chain growth process starting with a trialkylaluminum compound represented by the formula AlR3, in which each R group contains 3 to 10 carbon atoms, adding an average number of ethylene units to the R groups so as to form aluminum alkyls which are enriched in R groups having the selected carbon number, recovering the alpha-olefin products from the aluminum alkyls by catalyzed alkyl displacement, and recycling the trialkylaluminum product of the displacement to the chain growth reaction.
