Apparatus for enclosing part of an elongate object (31), comprising: (a) a casing (19, 21) to enclose part of the elongate object (31); (b) a sealing member (1) comprising sealing material to form a seal between the casing (19, 21) and the elongate object (31); and (c) a compression member (25) to compress the sealing member (1) in longitudinal direction with respect to the elongate object (31) thereby causing at least some of the sealing material to be displaced in a lateral direction with respect to the elongate object (31) to form the seal; wherein, in use, the longitudinal compression of the sealing member is caused by moving the sealing member and/or the compression member (25) relative to the casing (19, 21) in a lateral direction with respect to the elongate object (31).
