The protection device has an identification element (4) which is formed in at least 2 parts (1,2), which are separated from one another by separation surfaces (5) of complementary profile. Both parts carry different parts of the vehicle identification number characters, which cooperate to provide a readable identification number when the 2 parts are mated together. Pref. one part of the identification element is secured to the vehicle and the second part is retained by the vehicle owner, their complementary surfaces pref. provided by a ray structure which radiates outwards from the central point (13) within the identification element.
