Sec. aryl-phosphane oxide prepn. from alkyl aryl-phosphinite without disproportionation

Prepn. of sec. arylphosphane oxides of the formula Ar-P(=O)(H)-R<4> (I) comprises reacting alkyl arylphosphinites of the formula Ar-P(OR<5>)-R<4> (II) with water in 1:(1-1.5) molar ratio at elevated temp.; in which Ar = a gp. of the formula (III); R<1>, R<2>, R<3> = H, halogen, CF3, 1-6 C alkyl, 1-6 C alkoxy, di-(1-6 C)-alkylamino or diphenyl; R<4> = 1-12 C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or Ar; R<5> = 1-4 C alkyl.
