A voltage regulator for regulating a load voltage, which can execute relatively easily a combination of step up, step down and neutral, change primary taps or polarities of loaded series transformers without an instantaneous interruption short-circuit or change the turns ratio for bringing the series transformers into a non-excited state, or regulating the load voltage by utilizing an auxiliary transformer. As the first example, the voltage regulator comprises series transformers, a switch including only a semiconductor device having a self-turn-off function without having a power circuit for restricting a transient phenomenon at switching of a circuit, a simple transient suppressor operable at the time of change-over of the circuit, and a control circuit for executing the switching operation at a high speed, as shown in Fig. 1. As the second example, the voltage regulator comprises an autotransformer, a switch including a semiconductor device having a self turn-off function for switching taps or series connection of windings so as to vary the effective number of turns of a common winding portion of the autotransformer, a simple transient suppressor operable at the time of switching of the taps, and a control circuit for executing the switching operation at a high speed, as shown in Fig. 2.
