Operation of the engagement process occurs by means of a toggle rotary knob (1), the position of which indicates the selected gear via a scale. For maintaining the gear after release of the knob, a securing mechanism (2) is used. On the same shaft, two curve discs (3,4) are connected with the knob and securing mechanism. By means of levers (5,6), the paths used by the curve discs are transmitted to the chain guides (9,10). Steering levers (11,12) bring about a movement of the chain guides on space curves in the vicinity of the gearwheel groups (13,14) on the side where the chain (15) runs to the gearwheels. They undertake also the alignment of the guides in two space directions, whilst the third space direction is determined by a telescopic-type connecting rod (16).
