Spindle unit (5) and tailstock (8) move on common tracks (2) in line with the main spindle, and the interval between the clamp (11) on the main spindle side, and the tailstock projection (12), remains constant right the way along the machine-bed track (1) during the spindle travel. This spindle unit and tailstock can be mounted on a common slide (3), and the tailstock can be moved axially towards the main spindle (6). Infeed and quick traversing movements are taken on by the machine slide (3) in the Z direction, and the spindle unit can be addressably moved to a workpiece timing station, where precision transfer of the workpieces is controlled by the Z-axis of the spindle unit, or slide and tailstock.
