[Also in Divisions B7 and F2] The invention relates to a fluid flow control valve and is described with reference to a variable area nozzle of an aircraft vertical lift control nozzle. The nozzle comprises a chamber 12 having an inlet port 20 to which air under pressure is supplied through a duct 22, the chamber having an opening which is closed by a cover member 18 in sealed engagement therewith. The chamber is provided with an outlet nozzle 16 of frusto-conical form. A stationary cylindrical member 28 is disposed within the chamber, the lower end of the member being of conical form 30 and projecting through the nozzle 16 so as to define therewith an annular outlet passage 38 through which air may discharge so as to impart vertical thrust on an aircraft on which the nozzle is mounted, the thrust being controlled by an axially movable cylindrical valve member 40 which varies the area of the outlet passage 38. The stationary member 28 is provided at its upper end with flanges 32 which are secured by bolts to the cover 18. The stationary member is provided on its inner surface with a pair of longitudinally-extending recesses 60, 62 which form a guide for a crosspiece 56 which is integral with a screwed rod portion 58. A cross-piece 64 is secured to the rod portion 58 by means of lock nuts and extends through openings 50, 52 in the wall of the stationary member 28, the openings being extended longitudinally so as to allow axial movement of the cross-piece 64. The cylindrical valve member 40 is secured to the cross-piece by means of screws 66, the valve member being guided on the stationary member 28 by an annular projection 47. A ring 46 mounted in a groove in the member 28 engages the inner surface of the valve member so as to provide a seal therebetween. The cross-piece 56 is formed with a slot 70 in which is disposed a roller 78 carried on a crank pin 76 of a rotatable shaft 74 so that as the shaft 74 is rotated the rod 58 and so the valve member 40 is moved axially. The shaft 74 is rotatably mounted within a cylindrical boss portion 72 of the chamber 12 and carries at its outer end a lever 84 which is angularly movable by a pilot's control lever, movement of the lever 84 being transmitted to the shaft 74 by a double bevel assembly 86. The lever 84 is formed with two tabs or ears which co-operate with a fixed stop to limit angular movement of the lever. |
