A multispindle lathe comprises an indexable spindle drum 3 carrying a plurality of rotary work-spindles 4 and compound tool slides mounted on a member 6 supported between the drum housing 2 and the end frame 5 on the lathe bed 1. The compound tool slides include a cross-slide 7 and a longitudinal slide 8 which carries a tool holder with a plurality of tools. The tool holder may be in the form of an indexable turret 9 which forms a tool changing device and which is actuated electrically, hydraulically or a combination thereof. Each tool slide is therefore adapted to present to a work station at any time one of a plurality of cutting tools. In an alternative embodiment the tool turret may be in the form of a tool changing device having a tool store. In operation, the work spindles are indexed to successive work stations whereat the workpieces carried by the spindles are machined by one or more of a plurality of tools. The operation of the machine may be automatic and controlled numerically, the sequence of operations being programmed. |
