[Also in Division H4] A radar simulator (see Division H4) includes arrangements shown in Figs. 5 and 6 for generating periodic electrical time-varying voltage waveforms representing respectively the functions x sin # + y cos #/ct and x cos # - y sin #/ct, where x and y are preset input variables representing the cartesian co-ordinates of the simulated target, Fig. 1 (not shown), # is a continuously varying angle input representing the direction of the aerial beam of the simulated radar, c is a constant and t is the real time variable measured from the start of a waveform recurrence period, said period being equal to the pulse recurrence period of the simulated radar. The two functions are used respectively to evaluate the range of the target and its angular displacement from the aerial beam axis (see Division H4). As shown in Fig. 5 the waveform x sin # + y cos #/ct is generated by applying a parabolic waveform 1/ct from a timebase 11 to an inductive resolver 42 controlled by the # input shaft to give outputs sin #/ct and cos #/ct which are applied to a combining amplifier 54 via rectifiers 52<SP>1</SP>, 53<SP>1</SP> and linear potentiometers 50 and 51 set respectively in accordance with the x and y inputs. As shown in Fig. 6 D.C. voltages x cos #, and y sin # are produced by applying A.C. outputs of amplitudes cos # and sin # from an inductive resolver R1 to respective phase sensitive rectifiers 69, 70 through x and y potentiometers 65, 66 and the resultant voltages are applied to clamp the initial levels of parabolic waveforms 1/ct generated in circuits 71, 72 to give waveforms ct generated in circuits 71, 72 to give outputs x/ct cos #, and y/ct sin # which are combined in amplifier 25 to give the required waveform x cos # - y sin #/ct ; alternatively the A.C. signals x cos # and y sin # are applied to a single phase sensitive rectifier controlling a single 1/ct circuit.
