PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reader capable of reading an original image just after a light source illuminating an original is turned on even when the level of the light quantity of the light source is low. SOLUTION: In this image reader, the light quantity of a fluorescent lamp 3 illuminating the original is detected by a light quantity sensor, the lamp 3 is controlled by feeding back so as to always obtain a previously set value, and an image reading means reads the image on the original by the solid-state image pickup element 7. In this case, there are provided with a light quantity setting means plurally provided with the set values of a light quantity set level, and switching the set value in accordance with the output of the light quantity sensor; and a switching means plurally provided with the gain value of the output of the element 7 and switching the gain value to the previously set gain value in accordance with the switching of the set value of the light quantity level. |
