PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a field-emission electron gun suitable for a display device by subjectingγ-characteristic signals for use in a picture tube or the like to simple electrical processing. SOLUTION: A conical emitter 1 and a gate electrode 2 made of a metallic film are provided on a substrate 4, and a second gate electrode 3 made of a metallic film is provided on the electrode 2. The electrodes are electrically isolated from each other by means of insulating films 5, 6. Further, a phosphor 7 and an anode 8 are installed above the electrode 3, a voltage Vg1 is applied between the emitter 1 and the electrode 2, and a voltage Vg2 is applied between the emitter 1 and the electrode 3. Also, a voltage Va is applied between the electrode 8 and the emitter 1. With the application of the voltage Vg1, electrons emitted from the end of the emitter 1 are decelerated by the electrode 3 and, after passing through the electrode 3, accelerated by the voltage Va of the electrode 8 to bombard the phosphor 7 to cause fluorescence. The voltage Vg2 is of a smaller value than the voltage Vg1 and, if the amount of emission is small, works to effectively control the gate voltage.
|
