PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a manganese dioxide catalyst having catalytic activity to a nitrile hydration reaction with reproducibility. SOLUTION: A permanganate is subjected to reduction treatment with a polyhydric alcohol to obtain the objective manganese dioxide catalyst. The polyhydric alcohol is, e.g. a nonarom. cyclic polyhydric alcohol or an about 2-10C aliphatic polyhydric alcohol such as mannite, glycerol, erythritol, sorbite or mannitan. The objective carboxylic acid amide is obtd. in a high yield with high selectivity by hydrating nitrile in the presence of the catalyst. The nitrile is, e.g. an α-cyanohydrin compd. such as 2-hydroxy-4-methylthio-butanenitrile or lactonitrile. |
