PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having good short wavelength output and excellent S/N and overwriting characteristics so that the medium can be used for a high-density digital recording system. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer containing at least a ferromagnetic metal powder formed on a nonmagnetic supporting body. The coercive force and Bm of the magnetic layer are controlled to 2000 to 3000Oe and 3800 to 5500 Gauss, respectively. The average major axial length and the average aspect ratio of the ferromagnetic metal particle 1 are specified to 0.04 to 0.10μm and 3.0 to 8.0, respectively. The average number of crystallites which constitute the ferromagnetic metal particle 1 is specified to 1.0 to 2.0. The average aspect ratio of the crystallites 2 is specified to 2.0 to 5.0. Moreover, a lower coating layer containing an inorg. nonmagnetic powder and a binder resin may be formed between the nonmagnetic supporting body and the magnetic layer.
