PURPOSE: To obtain a new dicarboxylic diester compound, capable of controlling the size of a helical pitch of a Ch phase by mixing thereof with a ferroelectric liquid crystal material and useful for the regulation, etc., of a phase transition temperature, threshold voltage, etc., in the development of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material. CONSTITUTION: This dicarboxylic acid diester compound of the formula [(m) is 1-10; (n) is 2-18; X is H or methoxy], e.g. bis[4-(4'-((S)-1- methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-4-biphenyloxycarbonyl)-2-methoxyphenyl] adipate. The compound of the formula is obtained by carrying out the condensing reaction of a 1-methylalkyl 4-(4-hydroxyphenylcarbonyloxy)-4'-biphenylbenzoate or a 1-methylalkyl 4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylcarbonyloxy)-4'-biphenylbenzoate with anα,ω-alkanedicarboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst by using a dehydrating agent. |
