1,250,346. Filtering and settling. ECODYNE CORP. 23 Dec., 1968 [27 Dec., 1967], No. 60932/68. Heading B1D. Suspension introduced at 14 is caused to undergo up-and-down motion in a settling tank 32 by an array of baffles while solids settle out by gravity; the liquid is then further treated by filter means 60. The filters are periodically washed, and the contaminated wash liquid is reintroduced into the settling tank at 95. As described, the up-and-down settling motion is caused by concentric baffles 24, 26 surrounding inlet tube 16. Baffles 34-44 prevent turbulence in the lower part of the tank, allowing heavier solids to settle, whereas baffles 42 encourage turbulence in the upper part to keep light solids in suspension. Heavy solids are stirred and collected by a rotary rake 22, discharging at 108; partly purified liquid is collected in a gutter 46, pipe 48, and filtered through annular sand bed 60. (Bed 60 is partitioned by radial walls 52). Filtrate from reservoirs 54 is allowed to backwash the bed sections sequentially by opening valves 82 in turn. Backwash collects in sump 86; at a level sensed by float 88, it is pumped via conduit 94 back to the settling tank. |
